Super Slatko Report

For this edition of the SSR, DJ Moe revisits the historical city of Pula.

The Aquarium in Pula has a rich history going way back, and DJ Moe will tell us all about it!

Today we are looking back at one of our favorite cities, Pula. As you may or may not know, Pula’s a 3,000 year old city which didn’t see much development until the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy took over and based its Navy there. Along with it came the development of schools, hospitals and their Hydrographic Institute to support the people of Pula.

The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy soon began working on its military infrastructure, we now see defensive systems and fortifications starting to spring up. From 1881-1886,  during Pula’s industrial period, we see the Veredula Fortress built, located on the Peninsula of the same name.

Made of finely worked stone blocks, bricks and reinforced concrete, this fortress was made to last. The Fortress consisted of soldiers accommodations, telephone center, a coal storeroom, an engine room, a sanitary facility, a grenade warehouse and ammunition armaments. It would later be modernized being outfitted with 2, 280mm artillery barrels built into its center in a revolving dome. The Fortress once held 1 commander, 4 officers and approximately 112-126 soldiers.

Up until 1950 the fort was all military, until it became property of the City of Pula. In 2002 the Veredula Fortress Expert Commission declared it cultural property. Also in 2002 the Fortress gained a new non military function when Aquarium Pula took over the Fortress to help recover sea turtles and display marine organisms.  And in 2008 the Veredula Fortress and Pula Aquarium became protected Cultural Property of the Republic of Croatia.

Aquarium Pula is now home to hundreds of fish species from northern and southern portions of the Adriatic and several tropical marine and fresh water species, as well as fish from Croatian Lakes and Rivers. According to their website, the new Fort Inhabitants can be found in rooms, hallways, tunnels and even its moat!

At that time of writing this Super Slatko Report, Aquarium Pula had a few exhibits on display worth checking out.

  • Adriatic Exhibit, where the focus is on the tides and the open Adriatic itself, featuring the amberjack, stingray and leerfish.

  • Mediterranean Exhibit, a large portion of this area is dedicated to Sea Turtles, as well as Morays and the Grouper.

  • Tropical Freshwater Exhibit - with exhibit centers itseldf around swamps, lakes and rivers, in this space you’ll see Piranhas, Cichlids and Spectacled Caiman.

  • Tropical Marine Exhibit - Showcasing Ecosystems that boast Blacktip Reef Sharks, Whitetip Reef Sharks, Banded Houndsharks, Stingrays and the most ferocious! The Clown Fish, like our little friend Nemo.

  • The North Seas - This part of the aquarium features fish from the Northern Belt, such as The Atlantic Wolffish, Lumpsucker, Shorthorn Sculpin and others.

Last but not least…

  • Cold Freshwater Exhibit - Where you get to see species from European Rivers and lakes. Such as the European Carp, Northern Pike, Sterlet, Prussian Carp and many more.

Obviously a lot to see here and you get the double treat of all this being in a historic venue as well.

Would you like to visit Aquarium Pula, visit their website here to find out more.

And Make sure to check out our 1st Pula mention way back in Super Slatko Report # 22! Where you’ll find more about what this amazing city has to offer.

That’ll do it for my Super Slatko Report!
