In this edition of the Super Slatko Report, DJ Moe tells us about the Lika Region of Croatia. Besides being home to Plitvice National Park, there’s plenty of splendor to contemplate and talk about!

Lika flies under the radar, it’s a place most notably known for being the county where you’ll find Plitvice Lakes, or maybe you may have heard of it as the birth place of Nikola Tesla.

Lika is also a place that people that live in Croatia aren’t too familiar with either. According to an article I read from this year (2021), from TOTAL CROATIA NEWS dot com. Lika, “traditionally has been known as the least developed part of Croatia.”

Thanks to a Zagreb to Split Highway, that was built in the 2000’s, (the A-1) things have changed. Practically overnight Lika has become a link between Central Europe and Dalmatia. With all this comes an influx of development, in the form jobs, new residents, and many other opportunities that Lika isn’t used to having.

In this same article, a particular advantage is highlighted when it comes to buying a home in Lika. Lika has lower taxes and prices when it comes to home buyers. With this new Highway, the proximity to larger developed cities becomes a reality. From Lika, It’s now 2 hours to Zagreb and Rijeka, 1 hour to Zadar and 30 minutes to the Adriatic coast. A person could buy a home in Lika at Lika prices and commute to a city where it possible to earn a higher  income than what you would find in Lika itself. Lika is becoming more and more a desirable place to live.

What type of person puts down roots in Lika today?

Obviously a cost conscious savvy buyer, but also a person who loves the outdoors.Since Lika is underdeveloped, a lot of the beauty is preserved and is located all around you. The Lika region doesn’t have a major city, but instead villages and small towns. It’s more known for its green forests, rolling hills, crystal clear streams, and clean air.

But if you aren’t in the market for a home in Lika, there are plenty of reasons to visit too. Plitvice Lakes are a top travel destination for Croatia, that has to be the #1 reason, and I covered a little bit in SSR#8

But There is lots to do on the Gacka River, canoeing, kayaking and fly fishing. Surrounded by lush flora and fauna in the crystal clear river. You could also visit the Kuterevo Bear Sanctuary, where you can see 8 brown bears that call this Sanctuary home. And if you need more water activities, check out Kruscica Lake, also known as the “Sinking River” as the lake goes underground towards its end. This lake is actually a man made reservoir, created by a dam on the Lika River. Here you can canoe, kayak and fish some more.

Another beautiful place in Croatia to add to our list of places to visit, hope to see it one day, 1st hand.

And that’s it for my Super Slatko Report.
