Episode 91
Dobra večer, dragi prijatelji!
We hope you are in the mood to party and sing!
In this episode, we’ll learn a well-known song from the Dalmatian coast, Večeras je naša fešta.
It’s a really fun song to learn and sing.
Enjoy!
Lesson
every - svaki
place - mjesto
everybody - svi
at, by - kod
to play - igrati
to sing - pjevati
its - (possessive) svoj
Večeras je naša fešta
Svako misto svoju feštu ima
svako misto ima svoj dan
a fešta, draga je svima
jer tu se piva po cili dan
Every place has its own festival
every place has its day
and the festival is dear to everyone
because there is singing all day long
A mi volimo feštu
i ribu kod staroga Duje
večeras je naša fešta
nek se daleko čuje!
and we love a party
and fish at old Duje’s
tonight is our party
let it be heard far away!
Večeras je naša fešta
večeras se vino pije
nek se igra, nek se piva
jer ‘ko ne piva dalmatinac nije
tonight is our party
wine is drunk tonight
let's play, let's drink
because he who does not sing is not a Dalmatian
Super Slatko Report
In this edition of the SSR, DJ Moe stays with our fešta theme.
He tells us about some of the most famous town-festivals throughout Croatia with a food theme.
Dobar tek!
Today I’m going to cover Croatian Food Festivals and Events.
For the months of December through February, I couldn’t find much that was a dedicated to food festivals as most gatherings around this time are holiday related. But here are the months that I did have something to offer.
March
Mali Ston honors St. Josip on March 19th with the Oyster Festival.
Amazing food is be served, including, Oysters, Muscles and other shell fish. All of this is washed down with wine from the Pelješac region.
April
In mid to late April Otok Korčula brings us the Korčulanske Pjatance. This one has historically been hosted around this time, but it took a break for a couple of years during Covid, and when it came back and was moved to October in 2022. So for now, I will put it into April.
This Food and Wine festival leans towards Gastronomy. Gastronomy - the practice or art, of choosing, cooking and eating good food.
This festival is usually held over a weekend and hosts several attractions for the lucky foodie who attends. Some of the top local restaurants get involved, famous chefs come by, local restaurants follow themed menus, lectures are held, there are even workshops, exhibitions and even a fair!
Unable to find information for a 2023 edition, fingers crossed that it happens though.
May
If you liked the sound of that last one, Otok Krk offers a more traditional dish celebration. Restaurants and taverns across the island will offer seasonal dishes to wet your appetite. A lot of the focus will tend to lean towards; young lamb, asparagus, seafood, cheese and seasonal herbs.
June
Founded by the Crikvenica Tourist Board, Blue Fish Month is hosted by the city of Crikvenica. This month long fish driven festival south of Rijeka, located on the mainland across from Otok Krk, happens in June! 2022 saw it occur in early September. For this list, I will put it in June where historically it usually takes place.
Blue Fish Month is full of, Blue Fish! There have been cooking shows, famous chefs, and most of the local restaurants come forth creative menus each year to participate. But the main attraction is a boat that brings in freshly caught Adriatic Tuna that local chefs will prepare three different ways. And as always, good food and equally good wine all around, živjeli!
July
For July, there is the Festival of Istrian Pasta. If this sounds good to you, make your way to Žminj, located on the Istrian Peninsula, where Local Pasta Professionals get to show off their pasta skills for all to see. You can buy some pasta, join a workshop with some primo pasta people and learn from the best or simply take it all in from afar. This Food Fesitval is well known and is ranked in the top 25 summer food festivals in all of Europe.
August
Just outside of Zadar, in Pakoštane, you can celebrate the Queen of the Summer, Figs! Lots of delectable treats to try, from the traditional cakes and jams, to brandy and liqueurs. You can even check out fig soaps and hand creams.
September
Let’s make our way to Zagreb and check out ZeGeVege. This is a 3 day event dedicated to healthy food, organic products and cosmetics free from animal testing. There are cooking workshops, lectures on Vegan lifestyle, ecology and sustainable living. Lots of delicious Vegan food to try and learn about for those interested. This event is actually part of a larger multi city event called Veganmania, with other cities hosting their own events; including Vienna, Munich and 15 others. This is the only festival of its kind that happens in Croatia.
October
The Oprtalj Chesnut Festival or Chestnut Festivity hosted in Oprtalj, a village east of Rijeka. This is a wonderful celebration of this amazing, nutrition packed fruit. This slightly sweet nut is used in several different dishes, desserts, purées, and soups. There is even a folktale that says that its considered lucky to carry three chestnuts in your pocked at all times.
November
Lastly In late November make your way to Istria, to the town of Vodnjan to celebrate the young olive oil. This is where you will find Olive Oil Producers, Olive Growers, olive oil connoisseurs and those eager to learn. Its a celebration of what they call Green Gold, denoting the young olive oils color. This festival is known as Istravirgin, dedicated to this fast growing young oil segment. If you are into tasting and experiencing quality young oilive oils, then this is the place to be.
If you’re into food festivals and happen to be in Croatia, make your way to one of the events I just listed. More than a few are making their way to my bucket list for sure.
And that’s it for the Super Slatko Report.
