In this edition of the Super Slatko Report, DJ Moe gives us a little backstory on one of Croatia’s dearest working class heroes. No, not a man or woman, but the loyal and loving beast of burden, the donkey!
This hard working, nose the grindstone contributor to the building of Croatia and most likely some of its most famous churches, buildings, and monuments in the country. These animals have been around for a long time, contributing to agriculture, infrastructure and now even tourism. Donkeys have done it all.
Not long ago donkeys were the best mode of transportation for food, people, and supplies . You could also find them working the fields, mills and construction sites. Several times a day these animals would haul more than their weight and help you get the job done.
The Donkey has taken on a role as a symbol of coastal Dalmatia. Jakša Fiamengo, a poet and author of Dalmacija, hrvatska ruža svijetova; writes about that, here’s what he says.
“They could have chosen anyone, a cow, goat, sheep, frog, snail, worm, snake...”
And regarding the mules work ethic, he says
“This hard working grey creature, the one that is stoic and hard working under any amount of pressure. The one who is always greeted with a curse…”
Now a days you can find donkeys on the coast and part of a tourist attractions, but there’s even a sanctuary in Split with former residents of Split zoo are often found in a pine shaded park overlooking the Sea. Commonly photographed by hikers and tourists.
There is one more donkey related topic I wanted to add, and that’s the Donkey Race of Tribunj.
The donkey race of Tibunj is an annual race that is held there. The race is a great reminder of the connection and a celebration of the Donkey’s contributions that this animal has meant to this community. They always try to theme it to make it interesting, even an all female race in recent years.
The use of a mule is symbol for hard working and being productive, which is a great way to look at one of the hardest working animals that doesn’t get a ton of praise.
And that’s it for this episodes super slatko report.
