Staying with the fashion theme.
Today I’ll be talking about the Cravat.
Born ahead of the necktie or bow tie, the cravat got its start in the 17th century.
Originally seen in 1660 on Croatian mercenaries, the Cravat was part of their uniform. At this time during the reign of Louis the 16th, the folks around Paris noted these mercenaries as quite fashionable and decided to adopt their neck tie look for themselves.
It’s possible the these neckerchiefs were initially worn to hide soil marks on the infantry’s shirts.
According to accounts the cravat was made of common lace, Muslin or silk. It was first called Croat but that was corrupted over time and became known as Cravat. The Cravats of officers were embroidered or trimmed with broad lace. Those of lower stature were made of cloth or cotton.
Another source of the Cravat was thought to be the Dubrovnik poet Ivan Gundulíc who had a portrait from 1844, but as we know now it originated much earlier.
Cravat Day in Croatia that is celebrated on October 18th.
The cravat regiment today
Today They are an honor guard based in Zagreb that performs marches in upper town Zagreb which culminates in a changing of the guard at St. Mark’s square. The regiment wear replica uniform of those military uniforms worn by the Cravat Mercenaries so long ago.
