The Super Slatko Report

In this episode’s edition of the Super Slatko Report, DJ Moe will tell us more about the wonderful island of Pag. Where is it located?

How many towns and inhabitants does it have?

And more!

Otok Pag is the 5th largest island on the Croatian Coast, its area encompasses 284.56 squared Kilometers (109.87 square miles) Its 58.25km long (36.195 miles) and 2-10km wide (1.2-6.2 miles).

In a 2011 census, the island boasted approximately 9,059 residents. Otok Pag is also the only Croatian island split into 2 counties, one beingLika-Senj County and the other being Zadar county.

Pag belongs to an archipelago chain of islands along the Croatian Coastline that sits roughly between the Istrian Peninsula to the north and Zadar to the south. Most of the island is rocky with smaller areas covered in green Mediterranean shrubs. The island also contains 2 karst lakes, Velo Blato and Malo Blato, and its highest peak being Sveti Vid at 349 meters or 1,145 feet.

Pag was the 1st first site to bring in a wind farm, known as “Vjetroelektrana Ravna 1” composed of 52 wind turbines that has been in operation since 2004. Pag is also known for its Salt cultivation, that has been practiced for more than a thousand years. So much so, that the town of Pag is situated where it is today, due to access to it’s salt production that dates back toRoman times that once laid claim to the island.

Pag is many things but an ideal Mediterranean island its not. As I mentioned earlier, the island is rocky and barren across most of its landscape, Lonely Planet dot com says that its perfect for a 1950’s Italian black and white Antonioni set or that it could even look like a moonscape! Despite all that, like other islands in Croatia Otok Pag has its people and their traditions.

One tradition in particular that is found in most Croatian homes is called Pag Lace. Pag Lace is a type of lace work that requires a needle and thread, as well as a backing which is a round or square hard stuffed pillow. The works are true pieces of art, intricately woven with impressive complexity and design. Pag Lace is made from memory or from an existing piece from past generations, where family members today create their own pieces based on ideas from their families past. The original pattern might be a decade or even a century old, then reimagined, by building on the past by adding to it with new ideas from today.

But if traditions and Pag Lace aren’t your speed, there is always Zrće Beach, a long pebble beach located near the town of Novalja. Zrće Beach is known as a party goers destination. With many Dance clubs and  Bars that are packed in each and every summer. Here you’ll find lots of DJ’s spinning the latest House, EDM, and Trance Music.

As if you needed more, Otok Pag also boasts Bungee Jumping, Jet-ski’s, party boats and inflatable catapults.

Pag offers something for everyone!

And that’s it for Super Slatko Report.
