Super Slatko Report

If you love the outdoors, this edition of the SSR will be great for you! DJ Moe will tell us about the Paklenica National Park. It has canyons, mountains, forest, wild animals, birds and so much more! Join us!

Located a little inland from the Northern Coast of Dalmatia, and about 47km ( 29.2 Miles) from Zadar we find Paklenica National Park.

The park is 100 square km (62.1 miles ) south of the Velibit Mountains, offering incredible views.

This park has a lot to offer:

For wild life there are:

  - deer

- bears

- foxes

- wild cats

- and lynxes

There are 2 Deep Gorges

- Velika Paklenica, which is 14km long (8.7 miles), and 500-800m wide (or 1,640-2,620feet)

- Mala Paklenica 12km long (7.46 miles), 400-500m wide (or 1,310 ft - 1,640feet)

There’s a high peak

- Vaganski Vrh - which is 1,757 meters high or (5,760ft) high

There’s actually a few caves in the park as well, but I wanted to call out one in particular…

Manita Pec, which has been the main attraction at the park amongst its visitors since 1937. Known for its Speleothems {Cave Formations, like stalagmites from the ground or stalactites form the ceiling}. Multiple formations taking shape over time, but some formations have taken shape into more recognizable designs like the helmet, or the organ (the musical variety) and the witch. The witch in particular is worth a google, it actually looks very much like a witch.

The cave also boasts 52 types of invertebrates, 20 of which cannot survive outside of the cave, 2 examples discovered and only found in this cave, Chthonius radial & Bogidiella Sketi.

Manita Pec, is what’s known as a show cave, tickets can be purchases as well as guided tours. The cave has massive caverns with elevated walking paths where you’ll feel and be very safe if you choose to visit. Suitable for the family.

Paklenica National Park is also well known for its Rock Climbing. Rock Climbers from all over the world travel here to try their hand at some of the rock faces around the park. So much so that there is an event held here every May in Velika Paklenica, where a 2 person team races to the top on one of the more challenging climbs, a 160m (520ft) cliff. Fastest time to the top wins.

There’s also hiking for both the adventurous types and the not so adventurous types with options to choose from, guided or non guided.

This park kept getting more and more interesting as I researched it, so it definitely makes my Croatia destination list.

And that’s it for the Super Slatko Report!
