Super Slatko Report
In this edition of the Super Slatko Report, DJ Moe will tell us about another of Croatia’s natural wonder. Have you heard of the Red and Blue Lakes of Imocki? Join us and be amazed!.
Today we talk about the Red and Blue Lakes of Imotski.
Imotski is a village located in the southern part of Croatia, near the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina, roughly 10 km (6.2miles) from the border.
With a population of roughly 15k people, Imotski is known for the Topana Fortress, first mentioned in the 9th century. But the Towns main claim to fame are its Red & Blue Lakes.
The Red Lake is the larger of the two, is actually a sink hole, with a Karst lake at the bottom.
As we know Karst from E61:
Karst is the type of topography that means its formed when rocks like Limestone, dolomite, or gypsum are broken down or dissolved by water. Meaning Drainage
The Red Lakes sheer cliffs contain high amounts of Iron that are exposed to the elements, these Iron rich rock faces have oxidized over time, rusting and creating a reddish color, hence its name.
The Red Lakes walls are 241 meters tall (790ft) above the water line. And the total explored depth of this sink hole is 530 meters (1,738 feet), making the Red Lake the 3rd Deepest sink hole in the world! there is also a cave at its deepest that is inaccessible making its true depth unknown.
For those interested in visiting the Red Lake to take in its beauty, there is actually no direct easy access to the lake itself. Given that the lake is located at the bottom of bowl of rocky red cliffs. The only people that should be attempting an actual visit to the waters edge would be skilled experienced rock climbers with proper equipment that are able to make the descent. For those interested in taking the view, without climbing, from up above are welcome to; there is parking along the access road to the Red Lake and a trail that leads you to the bowl to take it all in.
The Blue Lake is located nearby, located in a Karst Sink hole as well. The Blue Lake is smaller, and named after its stunning shades of Blue that water takes. The walls of Blue Lake are 220 meters tall (721 ft), and the water depth varies from season to season. Over time measurements have been taken, noting depths ranging from 90-114m (300-374 ft) deep. But these depths fluctuate drastically, as sometimes late in the summer, the Lake can completely disappear.
The Blue Lake is far more approachable, with dedicated walking paths that lead you all the way down. This lake is also swimmable when the lake allows for it. An article I read also sites that when dry, locals use the space as a football pitch.
Both lakes are close enough in proximity to visit in the same day by car. But for those seeking a little adventure, there is a 2+ hr trail loop hike, that allows you to take in both lakes and all the surrounding majestic scenery. Just so you know this trail is rated as Moderate, which could be for its length, duration or the trails difficulty level itself.
Worth noting, Speologoists speculate that both the Red and Blue lake are actually connected, and that both have waters that reach the Adriatic Sea at some point.
And that’s it for my Super Slatko Report!
